Honoring the Backbone of America: Truck Driver Appreciation Week

Every day, millions of truck drivers hit the road, making sure the clothes we wear, the food we eat, and the devices we rely on get where they need to be. If you can see it, touch it, or use it, chances are a truck driver brought it to you. These men and women are the heartbeat of our economy, and this week, we’re taking a moment to say thank you.

From September 10th to September 16th, we’re proud to join companies, communities, and individuals across the country in celebrating Truck Driver Appreciation Week. It’s a time to recognize the dedication and sacrifices truck drivers make to keep our world moving.

Why Truck Drivers Matter

They Keep the Economy Moving

Truck drivers are responsible for transporting a staggering 11.18 billion tons of freight in 2023, up from 10.93 billion tons the year before. The trucking industry employs more than 8.5 million people, making it one of the largest and most essential industries in the U.S.

They Support Our Daily Lives

Think about your morning routine—your coffee, your clothes, your phone. None of it would be in your hands without a truck driver. They deliver groceries to stores, medical supplies to hospitals, and packages to our front doors. They don’t just move goods—they keep our lives running smoothly.

Their Job is Tough, But They Take Pride in It

Driving a truck isn’t easy. Long hours, time away from family, unpredictable weather, and never-ending traffic jams are just part of the job. But ask any truck driver, and they’ll tell you there’s something special about the open road. They get to see the country in a way few others do and take pride in knowing that their work makes a real difference.

They Showed Up When the World Stopped

During the COVID-19 pandemic, while many of us stayed home, truck drivers kept going. They delivered food, medicine, and life-saving supplies when the world needed them most. Even now, they continue to transport critical medical equipment, vaccines, and other essentials, ensuring communities get what they need, no matter what.

The Road Ahead for Trucking

  • The average truck driver salary in 2023 was $54,320.
  • The trucking industry is projected to grow from $1.01 trillion in 2023 to $1.51 trillion by 2034.
  • The industry is facing a driver shortage, with 240,300 job openings for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers each year, a trend expected to continue as experienced drivers retire.

A Simple Way to Show Appreciation

Next time you pass a truck on the highway, take a moment to appreciate the person behind the wheel. A wave, a smile, or even just giving them the space they need on the road can go a long way.

To all the truck drivers out there: thank you. Thank you for the long hours, the sacrifices, and the dedication to keeping our economy running. We see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you—not just this week, but every day.
